My Guru Naseeruddin Shah told me a very important thing once. What's your creative compass while choosing and rejecting roles? And, I would say content was king earlier, and now content is queen too. As I said earlier, the universe is my personal manager. At that time, I did not know OTT would happen in India, but it did. If you were a male actor, you would be given challenging roles whatever your age was, but if you were an actress, after a certain age, you would be slotted in a particular role and that was my nightmare. When I was younger, I used to be very scared about being slotted after a certain age. Kusum Devi Yadav - my character from Sacred Games 2 - was a male character in the novel, and the creators decided the character should be a female. I am shooting the project in Delhi right now and I am having a lot of fun creating this new mind. The director and production house are amazing as well. There is a purani Delhi dialect and I am learning it. For the first time, I will be playing a character from North India. Unfortunately, I cannot give details, but I can say that I am breaking the supporting actor slot with my new project. I want to break every slot and want to do roles with different dimensions. I wouldn't say she is loved by all, but like one of the critics said, she is deliciously villainous, and I am grateful to 2021.Ģ022 is equally exciting. She was really loved by all, and, of course, Ankita. I was so grateful and I am so grateful for Lilly. Every actor wants to be seen in different kinds of roles. The universe planned it for me in such a way that both my looks were out at the same time. I keep saying that the universe is my personal manager. I was promoting Bombay Begums and Dhamaka was so different from it. While I was promoting Bombay Begums, the Dhamaka team approached me and said they were releasing the teaser. It was completely different than anything I had done before. Lilly was a bar dancer who had a completely different look, she was a seductress and danced. I think 2021 was amazing because I got to play such diverse characters - Lilly from Bombay Begums and Ankita from Dhamaka. Before Bombay Begums, Alankrita (Shrivastava, director) said that she had seen my work in Qila, but it was Gully Boy that got me the instant recognition.įrom the seductress Lilly in Bombay Begums to the grey character, Ankita, in Dhamaka, 2021 saw you in two different roles. Both Sacred Games 2 and Gully Boy got me attention not just in India but globally as well. In fact I got my first international award recently, the Asian Academy Creative Award. Yes, Gully Boy will always be a very special film for me. Would you say Gully Boy was your big breakthrough in Bollywood? In an exclusive conversation with IndiaToday.in, Amruta Subhash talked about the attention she received after Gully Boy, her hunger for good roles and the one lesson her mentor Naseeruddin Shah taught her. The journey, however, hasn't been easy, and after playing second fiddle many times, she is now ready to make her big lead debut in an upcoming project. In an industry that seldom churns out strong author-backed characters for women, Amruta has been able to create her own path. The actress who played two strikingly different characters in 2021 - the seductress Lilly in Bombay Begums and the shrewd Ankita in Dhamaka - has a lot on her slate for 2022. Amruta Subhash talked about her mentor, Naseeruddin Shah.Īmruta Subhash has become a force to reckon with when it comes to hard-hitting performances.
